Volunteer Opportunities
So, you want to participate but are a little uneasy about “treading the boards”?
The Wilton Playshop has a myriad of ways to participate in the community theatre experience. Whether you want to help with just one show or volunteer on a regular basis, every level of help is appreciated
Here is a partial list of some of the areas volunteers are often needed:
Box Office: We need help from time to time with Box Office Backup, providing a second person on show nights to help the audience get and pay for their tickets.
Make-Up: Done theatrical make-up before? Just do your own every morning? When we have large casts for shows such as Chorus Line, Sweet Charity or Our Town often extra hands are needed in the make-up department before each show.
Dressers: Ever wondered how those actors get in and out of costumes so quickly? Often it is because of a dresser backstage who assists with laying out clothing, unzipping, zipping, hanging up and organizing scarves and shoes so they are where they need to be. For big musicals we often need many, and sometimes one per actor if he/she has many changes.
Set Construction: From time to time we do some silly things like the two story Victorian interior for Arsenic and Old Lace, the house that went from an interior in act one to an exterior in act two for 5th of July or the set of a set that spins around in Noises Off. If you have a hammer and can fog a mirror we’d love to have you help. There is always someone who actually knows what they are doing who can teach you whatever technique is needed.
Set Painting: Help is needed on almost every set, to paint. Sometimes it is simple one-color painting, sometimes it is elaborate theatrical techniques. There is always someone who actually knows what they are doing who can teach you whatever technique is needed and it is an exceptionally fun and fulfilling part of set work.
Assistant Stage Management: Are you organized? Can you shout loud enough to halt a room full of chatter? Then you may want to consider Assistant Stage Manager. In this position you could learn the job next to a veteran Stage Manager. What is the job? Running the show itself from backstage.
Costumes: We have a need for people to help find, create, organize, and alter costumes for almost every show.
Lighting: Want to learn how to light a show? Have a burning need to see how a lighting board works? Then this is the job for you.
Hospitality: Like to entertain? Like to arrange cookies in a festive manner? Live to pour decaf from a silver pitcher? You may want to look at helping in with Hospitality.
These are just some of the jobs and activities that go on behind the scenes here. We have been doing it for over 70 years and there are people here who have have been here for a long time and never been forced on stage.
Print out a volunteer form and mail it us. We will put your name on the list of people to call the next time we need a hand.
